New Student FAQ
Your First Class or Session - What to Expect
Pilates is taught orally, so you will be listening to your teacher give clear and detailed cues and explanations for each exercise both in class and in a private session. As you listen to the cues, your teacher may give you corrections in your alignment. Depending on what workout your teacher has planned, you may be instructed in the proper way to set up different pieces of equipment.
Your class or session will be challenging, and you will begin to learn how to incorporate Pilates exercise concepts like breath and control while also learning the correct method for each movement, and how to use your equipment correctly.
At the end of your session you will be asked to clean off you mat and put whatever props and equipment you used away. Please help us keep a neat, organized space, and that everything is ready for the next student.
FAQ’s
What is Pilates?
Plates is resistance training. The Pilates system uses springs and the body’s own weight to develop strength in the core and in the whole body.
I am athletic and strong and have done Pilates mat classes elsewhere. Do I need to come to Beginner class?
Yes! Absolutely. Your beginner classes will be the foundation of your Pilates practice, and we want to make sure it’s strong. Our classes all employ traditional Pilates equipment using springs and moving parts, and you need to learn how to set up and operate that equipment correctly and safely in a class setting before you can move to the more advanced levels. Our teachers will walk you through the correct way to do you exercises so that you get the most out of every workout.
You have a lot of class names on the schedule - what’s what?
Beginner classes are for those with little or no Pilates experience, and are appropriate for everyone. Even Super Advanced students can always benefit from getting back to basics.
All Levels classes assume that you have a working knowledge of the Pilates Mat/Tower equipment and can perform the basic mat series workout correctly and safely, and move to more rigorous levels from there.
Reformer classes are designed for students already familiar with Reformer equipment and are looking to expand their practice outside Private session. We recommend a Private Session before taking a Reformer class.
Pilates-STS and Pure-STS are challenging, rigorous workouts using our TRX suspension training equipment. Pilates-STS combines classical Pilates with the extra challenge of suspension training. Pure-STS is focused on the unique challenges of the Navy Seal style suspension training regiment.
Pilates Sculpt combines traditional Pilates equipment with hand weights for a workout with arm and leg shaping and toning in mind.
Tower/Spine Corrector classes introduce yet another piece of classical Pilates equipment on the Mat. The Spine Corrector holds the body in alignment and allow students to focus on Tower exercises while in a supported position.
Prenatal class is taught by teachers certified in Prenatal Exercise and Pilates. This class modifies appropriately and safely for the pregnant body, while providing a challenging workout.
What should I wear?
Comfortable athletic wear, free of buttons, snaps, and zippers, that allows the Instructor to see the alignment of your body. All spaces in the studio are co-ed so please dress accordingly. We do not recommend baggy shorts as we incorporate inversions and straddle stretches in our workouts.
I need to cancel my class reservation or Private Session but it’s less than 24 hours in advance. What can I do?
Send a friend! Your sessions at Real Pilates are always transferable, and we welcome anyone who would like to take your spot to avoid a cancellation penalty. The front desk will try their best to fill your spot if you cannot make it, but we can’t guarantee a filled spot on short notice.
I'm pregnant. Can I do Pilates?
Yes! Our staff has a large number of teachers who are experienced and qualified in Prenatal exercise. Prenatal clients are able to take both Private Sessions and Prenatal classes, and may resume regular group classes after their pregnancy.
Why does prenatal cost more than a regular class?
Prenatal teachers are dual certified in both Pilates and Prenatal exercise. Our prenatal classes are also limited to no more than 3 clients in some classes, and only 10 in others.
I have a shoulder/back/knee injury. Can I do Pilates?
Yes, there are literally thousands of exercises and modifications for different injuries and conditions. We are well equipped to work with a variety of injuries. We recommend making an appointment for a Private Session before joining classes in order to learn how to modify exercises appropriately for your injury.
Do I tip my instructor?
Tipping is not customary or necessary for Pilates. However, if you are particularly thrilled with your session your gift will be gratefully appreciated.
Do I tip my Massage Therapist?
Tipping for bodywork is customary for excellent service.
